A CT scan with the lowest possible radiation has been developed for children, according to a new study.
Researchers at the Queen Silvia Children's Hospital looked at images produced by past scans and used computer manipulation to recreate the effects radiation levels would have on the picture.
If the radiation dose is lowered too far in CT scans, the image becomes blurry which makes it difficult for doctors to spot small but important details.
"Adjusting exposure is important, as a small patient does not need the same exposure as a large one," said Kerstin Ledenius, of the Sahlgrenska Academy.
"Children also differ anatomically from adults, which affects the image quality needed."
This comes after researchers at the University of California Los Angeles warned that CT scans could cause secondary cancers.
John Boone, said that physicians should take into account the risk of secondary cancer when discussing treatment options with patients.
