Insulin to treat Alzheimer's?

A low dosage of insulin could be used to treat Alzheimer's, new research has indicated.
The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Buffalo, revealed that a low dose of insulin suppressed four proteins in the blood associated with Alzheimer's disease, including beta amyloid - a hallmark of the plaques seen in the condition.
"Our results show clearly that insulin has the potential to be developed as a therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's, for which no satisfactory treatment is currently available," said author Paresh Dandona.
This follows news that brain plaques are present in the brain years before the symptoms of Alzheimer's appear.
Authors of the study, published in the Annals of Neurology, said that the technique could be used to detect which older people would benefit from early Alzheimer's therapies.
Two brain imaging techniques were utilised to reveal which apparently healthy older people had amyloid plaque deposits in the brain.
