CT scans 'may cause cancer'

CT scans could cause secondary cancers, according to a new study involving testicular cancer patients.
Research published in the journal Cancer found that older men with testicular cancer who chose to have multiple CT scans over lymph node removal ran an increased risk of developing an additional cancer.
John Boone, from the University of California Los Angeles, said this means physicians should consider the risk of secondary cancer when discussing treatment options with their patients.
"What has happened is that because CT images are so diagnostically useful, physicians request them for their patients in great numbers, so the concerns are really based upon the fact that 80 million CT scans are performed every year in the US," he elaborated.
This comes after scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital in Ontario developed an organic nanoparticle which is capable of using heat and light to find tumours.
The nanoparticle is formed through a combination of chlorophyll and lipid, and can be filled with drugs to treat the tumour.
