Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 31st March 2011
Eating a healthy diet and reducing alcohol intake can cut the risk of bowel cancer, according to one expert.
Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said that eating plenty of fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and fish, consuming red meats in moderation and cutting alcohol intake can help to cut the risk of bowel cancer.
He added that regular exercise has also been shown to cut the risk of developing the condition by up to 50 per cent.
"Exercise also helps to control weight gain, which is important as obesity is linked to a higher risk of bowel cancer. We recommend that people should aim for 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity every day, which means getting out of breath," he said.
Bowel cancer screening was introduced nationally for people aged between 60 and 74, after it was found that the incidence of the condition in 60-69 year olds increased by more than 12 per cent in England between 2006 and 2008.
