Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 30th March 2011
The advent of the internet and smartphones has changed how people eat and their relationship to food, research has shown.
A study conducted at Rochester Institute of Technology found that students are more likely to sit at a computer while eating than at a kitchen table.
Furthermore, it was revealed that the internet is utilised to retrieve recipes and nutritional information more than the traditional cookbook.
Author Madeline Varno said: "As opposed to their parents or grandparents, college students do not see meals as a central activity in and of itself, either for enjoyment or communication."
She explained that for the younger generation, eating is now just one of several activities being multitasked at once, alongside surfing the web, working or communicating on Facebook.
This comes after Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said that people must eat well in order to reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
