A new drug that could be used to treat cancer could potentially be used on multiple forms of the disease, and is on its way to clinical trials.
The drug, AT-406, targets proteins that block normal cell death from occurring, causing tumours to die without harming normal cells.
It could be used by hospital doctors alone or in combination with other treatments, according to the researchers at the University of Michigan who developed the drug.
"Removing key apoptosis blockades in tumor cells is a completely new cancer therapeutic approach and could have benefit for the treatment of many types of human tumors," said study author Shaomeng Wang of the university's Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
It was also found to shrink tumours while causing few side effects in animal models, and is ingested orally rather than intravenously.
This week, scientists from John Hopkins University revealed a promising treatment for breast cancer, which blocks the enzyme required to energise cancer cells while infusing a drug directly into the tumour.
