Surgery outcome improved by more time lapsed after heart attack, experts say

The outcome of an elective surgery can be improved by waiting longer after a heart attack, scientists have suggested.
A study published in journal Annals of Surgery revealed that the recommended time lapse of four to six weeks is not long enough.
Researchers found significantly lower death rates among patients who waited eight or more weeks after a heart attack to undergo hip surgery, gallbladder removal, non-traumatic amputation, colon resection or elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.
Christian de Virgilio, of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), said: "The results of the study also reignite the question of whether, in this high risk group, physicians should consider coronary artery stenting or bypass prior to elective surgery."
It is hoped that the government's Responsibility Deal will promote healthy eating and lead to a reduction in cardiovascular conditions in the UK.
More than 170 organisations including McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC signed up to the deal, which involves clearly displaying nutritional information on menus.
