Register as an Dietitian
Monday 21st March 2011
The decision by McDonald's to display calorie information on its menus has been welcomed by the National Obesity Forum, which suggests the move will lead to healthier eating in the UK.
Tam Fry, spokesman for the organisation, said that if the change has the intended effect, it will be "wonderful".
He predicted that the government will make it obligatory to put calories on display in all fast food outlets.
However, a shift towards healthy eating in the country could take a year or two, Mr Fry added.
"I would not expect an immediate response ... but over the course of time I really do believe that people are starting to become more conscious of the food that they eat, and of the amount and calories that they eat," he explained.
This comes after more than 170 organisations including McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC signed up to the government's Responsibility Deal which is designed to promote healthy eating.
The fast food outlets agreed to remove trans-fats from their products and put calorie labelling in place.
