Trusts may be required to disclose the performance of people in hospital doctor jobs in a bid to improve services, a report has claimed.
The Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery showed that by collecting and analysing data, hospitals have managed to cut death rates for cardiac surgery by 50 per cent.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley said he wants data transparency to be a top priority for the NHS, describing it as a "powerful driver for clinical excellence".
"It's no flight of fancy to suggest that all providers in the future will be required to have robust clinical audit systems in place as a condition of contracting for NHS services," he commented.
The cost of data collection for cardiac surgery in England is £1.5 million per year, the study revealed - just 0.6 per cent of the total spend in the sector.
In other news, Conservative MP and GP Sarah Wollaston recently criticised David Cameron's programme of NHS reforms, saying the reorganisation is "doomed to fail".
