Ninety per cent of local authorities have signed up for early implementation of the government's plans for cross-working boards, giving plans for the NHS a boost.
The plans will localise the NHS, putting trusts closer to local authorities, and is intended to give communities more of a say in services needed. It will also cover issues such as transport, housing and leisure with regards to wellbeing.
According to the Department of Health, implementation of the scheme will see a more joined-up health service better able to keep up with the ageing population, rising costs of drugs and the increasing demand on services.
Care services minister Paul Burstow said: "There will be a common, flexible framework for the boards, which will set out their minimum membership and core functions. It is incredibly encouraging to see that so many local authorities want to be at the forefront this initiative."
This comes after a Care Quality Commission survey found that nine out of ten NHS staff feel that they make a difference to patients.
