Depression increases the dependence of stroke survivors, as does age and the presence of further medical disorders, new findings have indicated.
Research published in the journal Neurology found 174 of 367 participants who had suffered an ischemic stroke to be depressed one month after the event.
Twenty per cent of patients were found to be dependent three months later.
Arlene Schmid, the study's author, said: "Even if the treatment and improvement of post-stroke depression does not directly influence recovery, it is extremely important for depression to be identified and treated since it is associated with other health and social problems."
A study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology has found that people with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) have an almost two-fold higher incidence of stroke than those in a control group.
Patients with RVO experience blood flow turbulence, thrombus formation and retinal ischemia due to the compression of a retinal vein by an adjacent artery.
