Parkinson's patients in the early stages of the disease could be at a higher risk of several conditions due to a vitamin D insufficiency, research has shown.
A study, published in the Archives of Neurology, revealed that individuals in the early stages of Parkinson's disease have a high incidence of vitamin D insufficiency.
"Vitamin D concentrations did not decrease but instead increased slightly over the course of follow-up. This provides evidence that during early [Parkinson's], vitamin D concentrations do not decrease with disease progression," said the authors.
A lack of vitamin D has been linked to many conditions including impaired balance and muscle strength, cognitive and mood dysfunction in addition to diabetes, multiple sclerosis and some forms of cancer.
In other Parkinson's news, research on mice published online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry has found that the drug phenylbutyrate turns on a gene able to protect dopamine neurones, thereby halting the progress of the condition.
