Seventy per cent of men who have androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) following radical prostatectomy surgery put on a significant amount of weight in the first year, research has shown.
Scientists at four US Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in California, Georgia and North Carolina, found that men who received the ADT after the surgery to remove their prostate gland put on an average of 4.2kg.
Dr Stephen J Freedland, of the Duke Prostate Center at Duke University School of Medicine and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, said ADT is increasingly being used to treat localised cancer.
"This rising use of ADT makes it even more important that we pay close attention to the side-effects of the therapy, including weight gain, as obesity is linked with a number of chronic and potentially life-threatening health problems," he added.
Meanwhile, a study published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology found that the sudden ability of a long-term smoker to quit with ease could be a symptom of lung cancer.
