Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 10th March 2011
Pregnant women must consume plenty of vitamins and minerals as part of their diet, one expert has advised.
Jacqui Clinton, Tommy's health campaigns manager, said vitamins and minerals eaten when pregnant help babies to develop healthily.
She added that getting the right balance of food types is also important, with four key food groups to balance: starchy carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, protein rich food and milk and dairy.
"Some micronutrients are particularly important when pregnant, including folic acid, calcium and vitamin D, but equally, there are some foods best avoided in pregnancy, including all types of pate, liver, mould-ripened cheese and raw eggs," advised Ms Clinton.
This comes after BJOG warned that obesity during pregnancy is associated with many health risks including gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, prolonged pregnancy, induction of labour, caesarean sections, miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death.
Women are considered to be suffering from maternal obesity if they have a body mass index of more than 30kg/m2.
