Stem cells harvested from umbilical cord blood and menstrual blood could offer new therapies for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, research has indicated.
A study published in Cell Transplantation suggested that these cells would be used to promote cell survival rather than act as replacements when transplanted.
This is due to the immunological immaturity of the cells and their ability to differentiate into different types of cells.
The study pointed out the convenience of using these cells as they could be gathered at the time of birth as well as every month from women.
Meanwhile, research conducted at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found that blood retains its clotting properties for at least 11 days using standard refrigeration.
This is far longer than the current shelf life of 24 to 48 hours.
