Online nutrition courses 'could be improved'

Online nutritional courses do have benefits but are lacking in some areas, one study has found.
The Babson Survey Research Group investigated the growing trend of online nutrition courses, which meet professional education needs and science requirements in dietetics, medical, nursing and other health curricula.
Dr Nancy Cohen, professor at the University of Massachusetts, said that students can gain knowledge in online courses as well as in face-to-face courses, but satisfaction is mixed.
She explained that online courses also have advantages regarding time and distance, multimedia and virtual education techniques and are able to share resources more easily.
"However, if online courses are designed in such a way that traditional face-to-face methods like textbook readings, lectures, and examinations are published on the internet without considering social isolation, de-individualised instruction, and using technology for the sake of technology, effective learning may not occur," explained Dr Cohen.
Meanwhile, experts from McGill's Department of Psychology have said that dieticians should teach patients planning and visualisation techniques if they want to be successful in altering their diets.
