Thirteen new genes have been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) in a landmark study which could change the way medical professionals view the condition.
The majority of the genes identified in the study, published online in Nature Genetics, were not associated with any established risk factors for CAD such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.
With just six genes linked to well known CAD risk factors, researchers have said the study underlines the direct and indirect contribution genes play in heart disease.
Dr Robert Roberts, president and chief executive officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, said that the findings have opened up "new avenues" for therapies.
"This is a landmark result because we have identified so many genes and most operate using completely unknown mechanisms to us right now," he added.
Meanwhile, researchers from Johns Hopkins have found that a simple blood test carried out when a patient is discharged from hospital could cut readmissions for those with heart failure.
