Doctors must ensure they pay attention to patients taking medication they become addicted to, scientists have said.
A study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found that patients at a high risk for opioid misuse were not monitored appropriately by medical professionals in the US.
Lead author Joanna Starrels said that most physicians understand these problems, but little is done to help reduce the risks.
"Our study highlights a missed opportunity for identifying and reducing misuse of prescribed opioids in primary care settings," she said.
"The finding that physicians did not increase precautions for patients at highest risk for opioid misuse should be a call for a standardized approach to monitoring."
Meanwhile, research to be published in the journal Neurology, has found that regularly taking ibuprofen reduces the risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
The study found a 38 per cent reduction in the risk of Parkinson's disease in those who used it, in comparison to those who did not.
