Nanotechnology 'to provide new surgical therapies'

Nanotechnology is set to provide new surgical tools that could have a significant effect on the diagnostic and therapeutic methods used, a review has claimed.
Author Dr Bozhi Tian of Harvard Medical School said that the properties of nanotechnology can be utilised by surgeons to make progressions in their field.
Nanotechnology uses minute devices, measuring billionths of a metre, to complete procedures that would be impossible with larger tools. Their ability to travel relatively freely through the body makes them useful for drug delivery and tissue engineering.
Dr Daniel S Kohane, who also authored the review, said: "The ability to assess the merits of nano-based approaches is crucial for the protection of the best interests of patients and for the assessment of the cost-effectiveness of new therapies."
This comes after scientists from the Division of Pathology Informatics at the University of Michigan Medical School announced the development of a technique which looks set to improve computer-aided tissue analysis.
