The ancient therapy of acupressure has been found to improve the lives of individuals suffering from mild traumatic brain injury.
Scientists from the University of Colorado claim that when used on those with traumatic brain injury, the treatment was found to improve cognitive function.
Researchers used Jin Shin acupressure, which focuses on points located on "meridians" which run through the body.
Fingertips are used to stimulate specific points on the "meridians" which are thought to be connected to the health of various organs and the body and brain as a whole.
Lead study author Professor Theresa Hernandez said: "Think of the meridians as freeways and the pressure points as towns along the way.
"When there is a traffic jam in Denver that causes adverse effects as far away as Boulder, clearing the energy blocks, or in this case traffic jams, helps improve flow and overall health."
Meanwhile, research published in the journal Brain, has found that a new brain imaging technique could provide a window into the consciousness of patients with severe brain injury.
A number of the patients who were unable to communicate by way of voice and gestures were able to answer questions using mental imagery while others in similar conditions were not able to do so.
