Telling stories improves the lives of those with Alzheimer's disease, researchers have said.
Scientists at the University of Missouri found that a storytelling programme known as TimeSlips is an easy and affordable way to improve the lives of those with the condition.
It was found that the programme increased the expressions of pleasure and social communication in those with Alzheimer's, and results were discovered to last for several weeks following the last session.
Lorraine Phillips, assistant professor in the Sinclair School of Nursing, said: "It encourages participants to be actively involved and to experience moments of recognition, creation and celebration. Meaningful activities, such as TimeSlips, promote positive social environments that are central to person-centered care."
Meanwhile, research has found that dementias such as Alzheimer's disease are often misdiagnosed.
Scientists from the Kuakini Medical System in Honolulu said that around half of the autopsies of those diagnosed with the condition found that the characteristics of Alzheimer's to not be present.
