New factors have been identified that could inform medical professionals which cancer patients are at risk of developing dysphagia following treatment for brain and neck cancer.
Researchers found that large tumours, cancer cells which had spread to the lymph nodes, swallowing problems, six treatments per week and the cancer not being located on the vocal cords were all associated with dysphagia.
Dr JA Langendijk from the University Medical Center of Groningen said: "The knowledge provided here may help us to better tailor treatments for the patients: it may allow us to increase the intensity of the treatment while maintaining their quality of life."
This comes after health secretary Andrew Lansley announced a new cancer initiative, which aims to save 5,000 lives per year by 2014/15.
Improving Outcomes - A Strategy for Cancer aims to diagnose the condition earlier, help people lead healthier lives, screen more people and improve treatment.
