Register as an Dietitian
Friday 25th February 2011
Dieticians should advise patients to make action plans and visualize carrying it out, research has indicated.
Experts from McGill's Department of Psychology said that merely telling people they should eat differently does not work.
Study leader Barbel Knauper and her team found that when students were asked to visualise themselves consuming more fruit for seven days, they ate more over the week than they had done before.
Additionally those who visualised and used an action plan ate two times as much fruit as those who simply set out to do so without using planning or visualisation techniques.
"But research has shown that if people make a concrete plan about what they are going to do, they are better at acting on their intentions. What we've done that's new is to add visualization techniques to the action plan," she said.
This comes after research from the London South Bank University found that tart cherries could help athletes' recover faster from an intense training session.
