Refer an Audiologist
Friday 25th February 2011
Hearing aids significantly improve the quality of life for those with hearing difficulties, one expert has said, suggesting that audiologists should encourage people to get help.
Rachel Mcdonald of Deafness Research UK said that hearing loss can be hard to detect as it is a gradual process.
However, she said that it is essential that those who suspect they may be experiencing the condition to see their doctor for a referral to an audiologist who will be able to improve their quality of life.
The expert added that certain types of behaviours exhibited when young could lead to hearing loss in later life.
"If you go to loud clubs every night, listen to excessively loud music on your MP3 or work in a noisy industry and don't use hearing protection, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that you may damage your hearing," explained Ms Mcdonald.
This comes after Lorraine Gaily, chief executive of Hearing Link, said that people must visit audiologists in the early stages of hearing deterioration, after a link was discovered between hearing loss and dementia.
