Drinking one or two glasses of wine a day could protect against heart disease, a study has found.
Researchers at the University of Calgary in Canada found that the risk of heart disease for those who do not drink was 14 to 25 per cent higher than those who do.
Professor William Ghali said that after more research, the message that alcohol could have some health benefits could be incorporated into public health advice.
"With respect to public health messages there may now be an impetus to better communicate to the public that alcohol, in moderation, may have overall health benefits that outweigh the risks in selected subsets of patients," he said.
This comes after scientists from the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Consortium found that being a woman may not increase the risk of dying from treatment for a severe heart attack.
It is believed the reason more women seem to die from in-hospital heart attack deaths is due to other factors such as age and other health issues.
