NHS Scotland 'met stroke target year early'

NHS Scotland met its stroke target a year before the deadline, figures have revealed.
The health service aimed to reduce premature stroke deaths by half and fatal heart attacks by 60 per cent between 1995 and 2010.
It has now been revealed that NHS Scotland achieved the stroke target almost one year ahead of its deadline but they were just 0.4 per cent off doing the same for the fatal heart attack aims.
The Press Association reports public health minister Shona Robinson as saying: "Future improvements will largely depend on people's lifestyles - eating better, being more active, stopping smoking and drinking sensibly. We are taking firm action in all these areas to support people to live healthier lives."
Meanwhile, scientists from the Locomotor Experience Applied Post-Stroke trial found that stroke survivors who took part in a physical therapy programme involving walking or a home-based treatment focusing on strength and balance, showed improved walking ability.
