Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is durable five years after surgery, a large-scale study has demonstrated.
Scientists at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York also found that the rotator cuff has the ability to heal, even when imaging originally showed a defect at the site of the repair.
David Altchek, who was involved in the research, said that one year after surgery, 64.3 per cent of patients had a healed rotator cuff, which increased to 75.4 per cent at two years and 81.2 per cent at five years.
"Our study demonstrates that arthroscopic rotator cuff repair results remain excellent when followed over five years, and we found that some tendons that were incompletely healed at two years appeared to heal fully by five years, suggesting that rather than deteriorating over time, results may in fact improve over time," he said.
This comes after Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said that obese people suffer more complications following joint replacement surgery.
