Register as an Dietitian
Friday 18th February 2011
People in dietician jobs should advise patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have trouble sleeping to eat plenty of green vegetables, one expert has said.
Alison Wyndham, director of the Wyndham Centre, said that diet is important in the pain management of those with the condition and subsequently affects their sleep patterns.
Eating lots of green vegetables makes the body more alkaline, she explained, thereby reducing the possibility of inflammation.
"There are certain foods that create inflammation in the body, such as sugar and processed food, so I would recommend cutting such foods out of their diet," she added.
This follows research by scientists at the University of California in San Francisco that found poorer RA patients have a 20 per cent higher risk of depression than those who are wealthy.
It was revealed that the incidence of depression was significantly higher in those treated at a public hospital compared to a university medical centre.
