Refer an Audiologist
Friday 18th February 2011
People must visit audiologists early on in the deterioration of their hearing, one expert has said, after a link was discovered between hearing loss and dementia.
Lorraine Gaily, chief executive of Hearing Link, said that people should ask their GPs to refer them to an audiologist.
Additionally, in some areas of the country individuals over the age of 55 have direct access to audiology departments, she added.
"If there is a link that can be demonstrated between hearing loss and dementia, such that unmanaged hearing loss puts people at risk of dementia […] it makes it even more important that people are identified early and begin to aid their hearing early," added Ms Gaily.
These comments follow research by the Johns Hopkins Medicine and the National Institute on Ageing that revealed that older people with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time.
