Those who live in the north have a 20 per cent higher chance of dying early than those in the south, research has found.
A study, published on bmj.com, claims that since 1965, the chance of dying before the age of 75 is a fifth higher in the north of England than the south.
According to an editorial that accompanies the study, the north-south divide is now at its largest for 40 years and "the north is being decimated at the rate of a major city every decade."
The divide between the two halves of the country apparently decreased from the early 1980s to the late 90s but increase steeply between 2000 and 2008.
This comes after news that poorer rheumatoid arthritis patients are at a higher risk of depression than those who are wealthy.
Scientists at the University of California in San Francisco found that the likelihood of depression was significantly higher in those treated at a public hospital as opposed to a university medical centre.
