Advances have been made in the use of genome sequencing to help cancer in therapy at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and the Translational Genomics Research Institute.
Researchers have completed sequencing a single patient's normal calls and cancer cells, which is believed to be one of the first successful applications of whole genome sequencing in medical support of a specific cancer patient.
Keith Stewart, dean of research at Mayo Clinic, said: "This is a demonstration of the clinical utility of whole genome sequencing.
"As we do more and more of this, we will move closer and closer to personalised genetic medicine, which means using genetic information to minimise or prevent disease."
This comes after news that biopsies could soon be done painlessly through the use of lasers.
Scientists at Michigan State University are developing laser microscopes that will be able to deploy rapid pulses to identify molecules.
