Smokers may have a higher chance of developing motor neurone disease (MND), according to new findings.
Research, published in journal Archives of Neurology, analysed results from five large-scale studies which in total encompassed more than one million participants.
According to the analysis, smokers have a 42 per cent increased chance of developing amylotrophic lateral sclerosis - a form of MND.
Additionally, former smokers were found to have a 44 per cent higher risk of contracting the condition.
The authors of the study wrote: "Better understanding of the relation between smoking and ALS may further the discovery of other risk factors and help elucidate the nature of the disease."
This comes after John Kell, policy manager at the MND Association, claimed that the Commission on the Funding of Care and Support should allocate more tax funds to those with the condition.
According to the expert, the current system responds to slowly and unsatisfactorily to the aggressive condition.
