Register as an Dietitian

Obese individuals experience more complications following surgery to replace joints, one expert has said.
Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said that almost half of obese people do not recover from joint replacement surgery as well as those who are not obese.
Joint replacements were found to be ten times more likely to fail after seven years in overweight people compared to in individuals of a normal weight.
"For that reason, many surgeons advise their overweight and obese people not to have joint replacement surgery until they have lost weight," he explained.
This comes after two new studies presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons examined whether obesity contributed to more complications following hip and knee replacement surgery.
Meanwhile, Alan Gordon, exercise and nutrition consultant, said that overweight people must strengthen their core muscles before taking part in any training as they are likely to be weak.
