Sleep disturbance heightens the intensive of symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), new findings indicate.
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found disturbed sleep to increase the incidence of functional disability, depressive symptoms as well as responsible for heightened pain and fatigue.
This correlates with previous research on the topic, which found that disruption of sleep could lower the pain threshold and increase the intensity of pain in those with RA.
Dr Faith Luyster, lead author of the study, said: "These results highlight the importance of addressing sleep complaints among patients with RA. By treating sleep problems either pharmacologically or behaviourally, symptoms and activity limitations associated with RA may be reduced."
Meanwhile, scientists at the University of California in San Francisco found that the incidence of depression was higher in rheumatoid arthritis patients of a lower socioeconomic status than those who were wealthier.
