A new blood-thinning drug has been found to work better than aspirin to reduce stroke risk, a new study has found.
Apixaban, an anti-clotting agent, was discovered to reduce stroke in those who have atrial fibrillation (AF) by 3.6 per cent whereas aspirin was only seen to decrease risk of the condition by 1.6 per cent.
AF is a condition known to cause a fluttering heartbeat and result in blood clots, which increases the risk of a stroke.
Hans-Christoph Diener, of the University Hospital Essen, said: "We had not anticipated that apixaban would show such a big difference compared with aspirin while showing no significant increase in major bleeds."
Meanwhile, a study, from Warwick Medical School found that those who sleep less than six hours a night and have disturbed sleep have a 48 per cent chance of developing heart disease and a 15 per cent higher risk of having a stroke.
