Register as an Dietitian
Friday 11th February 2011
Research has indicated that those who drink diet soda every day are at a higher risk of suffering a stroke.
Scientists from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine surveyed participants about their eating and drinking habits before tracking whether or not they had a stroke.
It was discovered that those who drank diet soda on a daily basis had a 61 per cent higher chance of stroke than those who drank no fizzy drinks at all.
However, the research has come under fire by the Calorie Control Council who said that the findings are flawed.
"The findings are so speculative and preliminary at this point that they should be considered with extreme caution. In fact, the study has not been peer reviewed by any independent scientists and has not been published in a scientific journal," said Beth Hubrich of the council.
Meanwhile, it has been found in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study that individuals who have memory problems or other cognitive decline could have a higher chance of suffering a stroke.
