Multiple sclerosis (MS) could be prevented by increased exposure to the sun, researchers have found.
A new study, published in journal Neurology, investigated the level of sun exposure in a group of people exhibiting early signs of MS and a group without the condition.
It was revealed that participants with skin damage caused by the sun were 60 per cent less likely to develop MS than those who had experienced the least damage.
Robyn Lucas, study researcher, told WebMD that a few minutes of sun exposure is usually safe and likely to be beneficial to health.
"People have to find a balance and we are not really in the position to tell them what that balance is," she added.
"Even a single sunburn can increase someone's risk for skin cancer."
Meanwhile, scientists at Michigan State University are developing laser microscopes that will allow biopsies to be performed painlessly.
