Register as an Dietitian

Individuals suffering from dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can delay the onset of the disease by eating a healthy diet and not smoking, one expert has said.
Barbara McLaughlan, Royal National Institute of Blind People policy and campaigns manager, said that although treatment for aggressive wet AMD have progressed, therapies for dry AMD have proved more difficult.
She continued that as the population ages, increasing numbers of people are likely to suffer from the condition.
"However, people with dry AMD may be able to slow down [the] progression of the disease by not smoking, eating a healthy diet and taking specific supplements as directed by their clinicians," added Ms McLaughlan.
According to a study published in Nature, geographic atrophy, an untreatable form of AMD, is due to retinal pigmented epithelium cell degeneration.
Meanwhile, research published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine showed that difficult patients suffer from worse symptoms than those who are not classed as hard to deal with by clinicians.
