A common cold could trigger off type 1 diabetes in children, new research has revealed.
Children with type 1 diabetes are ten times more likely to have had enterovirus infection than those without the condition, according to a study published in journal BMJ Online First.
Dr Maria Craig, of the University of New South Wales in Australia, said that the new study was the first to investigate the results from molecular enterovirus-diabetes studies.
Healthday news reports Dr Craig as saying that the aim should be to "stop these viruses from contributing to diabetes - potentially leading to vaccination."
This comes after researchers from Washing University School of Medicine in St Louis discovered that two enzymes could be responsible for the blood vessel damage in diabetes patients.
Enzymes fatty acid synthase (FAS) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) have been commonly found in those with the condition.
