Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil could help prevent genital warts in males, according to scientists.
Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the vaccine can help to stave off four types of HPV infection and potentially the onset of external genital warts or lesions.
Sexually transmitted disease HPV has been linked to genital warts in addition to a number of cancers and HPV vaccine Cervarix is currently being used in the UK to vaccinate school-aged girls from cervical cancer.
Study researcher Joel Palefsky, of the University of California, told WebMD: "The most salient message is that the [Gardasil] vaccine can prevent HPV infection on the external genital region, which means that we can now prevent most cases of genital warts if the boy is vaccinated at a sufficiently early age."
This comes after Rob Darracott, chief executive of Pharmacy Voice, said that the number of non-EU pharmacists applying to work in the UK has dived due to the immigration cap.
