Women whose mothers had a stroke are at a higher risk of experiencing the same illness or a heart attack , researchers have said.
A new study, published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics, found that female heart patients are much more likely to have mothers who experienced a stroke than fathers who did.
Amitava Banerjee, a researcher in the study, pointed out that traditional risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes are less likely to account for heart attack risks in women than they are in men.
He adds that although women are less likely than men to have a heart attack, they are more at risk of dying from one.
Meanwhile, a study conducted by Lara Boyd, of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and the University of British Columbia, found that transient ischemic attacks, or mini strokes, cause more damage than was previously thought.
