Radiologists should help teach students physiology to eventually provide quality patient care, experts have said.
A study, published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, developed two radiographic models - one illustrating normal physiology and the other pathophysiology.
These models were then used to look at four broad physiologic principles across all organ systems: homeostasis, biologic energy use, structure-function relationships, and communication.
It was concluded that radiologists have a role to play in teaching physiology, just as many of them now teach anatomy.
Richard Gunderman, co-author of the study, said: "As clinicians, radiologists can help students to appreciate the clinical relevance of their studies, and radiologic images provide powerful, visual illustrations of basic physiologic principles."
This comes after news that tamoxifen, usually used to prevent the growth of breast cancer tumours, could also be used to cut lung cancer deaths.
Research published online in the journal Cancer found that those on tamoxifen for breast cancer tumours when they developed lung cancer were 87 per cent less likely to die from the lung cancer than those not on the drug.
