Women who experience menopausal symptoms may be at a lower risk of developing breast cancer, according to new research.
Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle interviewed 1,000 women with breast cancer and 500 without and asked them about their menopausal symptoms including hot flushes, heavy menstrual bleeding, bladder problems, vaginal dryness, depression, emotional distress, anxiety or insomnia.
Those who had experienced these symptoms were found to have half the risk of developing the two most common types of breast cancer - invasive ductula carcinoma and lobular carcinoma.
Christopher Li, a breast cancer epidemiologist in the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division, said that this was the first study ever to investigate this connection.
"We don't know a whole lot about all the biology that's at work here," he added.
This comes after Dr Mark Matfield, scientific co-ordinator at the Association for International Cancer Research said that 90 per cent of lung cancers are caused by smoking and that quitting the habit is by far the best way to reduce cancer risk.
