Women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery may be putting themselves at an increased risk of developing a very rare form of cancer, experts have warned.
The Food and Drug Administration in the USA has warned that saline and silicone breast implants are linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), after significantly more cases of the cancer were found in women who had undergone breast augmentation surgery.
However, the cancer is incredibly rare and the cases linked to implants are recorded as being less aggressive and more easily treated, so the risk to women who have had the surgery is still very low.
According to WebMD, William Maisel, chief scientist at the FDA's device center, said: "Women not showing symptoms or problems do not need to change their health-care routine. ALCL has occurred in a very small number of women compared to the millions who have had breast implants."
This comes after research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the number of patients suffering a stroke during or after coronary artery bypass graft surgery has decreased.
