Aging-related proteins sirtuins are linked to the most common type of breast cancer in older women, scientists say.
Researchers at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center found that a shortage of the protein that prevents age-related cell damage could cause oestrogen and progesterone receptor positive breast cancer.
The proteins had previously been linked to an expanded lifespan exhibited by different species on a calorie controlled diet.
Scientists found that mice deficient in the protein showed decreased activity of enzyme MnSOD.
Study leader David Gius said: "These results suggest that aberrant regulation of MnSOD plays a role in receptor positive breast cancer."
This comes after research published in online journal Cancer said that a medication used to prevent the growth of breast cancer tumours could also be used to cut lung cancer deaths.
Researchers found that patients on tamoxifen who also developed lung cancer were 87 per cent less likely to die from the condition.
