More than 84 per cent of girls aged 13-14 chose to undergo all three doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in the first year of the scheme, it has been announced.
Public health minister Anne Milton revealed the figures which show the programme has one of the best uptakes in the world.
It was also found that 76.4 per cent of girls in the second routine cohort have now completed the vaccination course, with more expected to do so.
Additionally, a total of 60.4 per cent of 12-19 year olds have had the full course, with these figures being more than twice as high as those in a US scheme.
This comes after the Department of Health defended the government's healthy eating initiative, saying it was clear the old ways of tackling the problem had been working.
They added that the government's programme ranges from nudges to serious intervention when it is necessary.
