The number of patients suffering a stroke following coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) has decreased, new figures have revealed.
Research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed that despite the increase in the number of older and more ill patients undergoing the surgery, incidence of stroke has actually dropped.
During the period 1982-2009, 1.6 per cent of those treated at Cleveland Clinic were found to have experienced strokes either during their surgery or soon afterwards.
However, according to WebMD, Larry Goldstein of Duke University Medical Centre said that these results do not necessarily represent the trends happening elsewhere.
"Like any other surgery, there are risks," he told the website. "If the view is that CABG will result in better quality of life or a reduced risk for death, it is probably a risk worth taking."
This comes after Merck & Co halted a study on the anticlotting pill vorapaxar and limited another due to an increase in brain bleeds among patients with a history of stroke.
