Refer an Hospital Doctor
Wednesday 26th January 2011
Hospital doctors will have to deal with steadily increasing cases of age-related neurological conditions in the coming years, experts have said.
Loyola University Health System neurologists Dr Jose Biller and Dr Michael Schneck wrote that the incidence of stroke, dementia, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy will become increasingly prevalent.
The paper, published in journal Frontiers in Neurology, adds that the medical profession is more equipped to deal with this than ever before, with new drugs and other treatments emerging.
They wrote: "[Diagnostic testing] has superseded the neurologic history and physical examination, which were never as accurate as we cared to admit."
Meanwhile, researchers from the University of Edinburgh found that if the brain is cooled down after an acute stroke, brain damage to the patient can be lessened.
The technique means lowering the body temperature to around 35 degrees C using ice cold intravenous drips and cooling pads.
