A medication used to prevent the growth of breast cancer tumours could also be used to cut lung cancer deaths, a new study has indicated.
Research published online in the journal Cancer investigated over 6,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1980 and 2003.
It was found that those on tamoxifen for their condition who also developed lung cancer were 87 per cent less likely to die from lung cancer than those who were not on the drug.
Elisabetta Rapiti, senior epidemiologist at the Geneva Cancer Registry, told WebMD that this is a significant percentage.
"Our findings are quite new and exciting, as they are the first to document such a strong association between the use of tamoxifen and reduced mortality of lung cancer," she commented.
This comes after researchers from Tilburg University found that women who receive false-positive mammograms suffer from high anxiety.
