DBS and stereotactic neurosurgery cure woman of depression

A woman has been cured of a case of severe depression through the use of innovative neurosurgical treatment.
Researchers from the University of Bristol and North Bristol NHS Trust pioneered a number of treatments including antidepressants, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and sterotactic neurosurgery.
The patient underwent DBS in the first trial that stimulates two different brain networks associated with the condition and experienced temporary respite from the depression but soon relapsed.
She then had stereotactic neurosurgery early in 2010 which has appeared to cure the depression.
The patient, 62-year-old Sheila Cook from Torquay, said: "The effects were remarkable. Within a few weeks my life changed. I felt happy for the first time in years and began to take an interest in life again. I read books, did the housework, went for walks and, perhaps most importantly, got to know my family again."
This comes after Jenny Armitage of Journeys Toward Recovery said that exercise and talking are essential in the recovery from depression.
